They give a gentle, accurate, thoughtful response that says the true thing while removing as many sharp edges as possible. The other person thanks them and goes ahead with what they were going to do anyway. They nod. They say "sounds good." Later, watching the predictable outcome, they think: they said it. They did say it. They just said it in a register no one was listening for.
Being heard is different from being understood, and they've spent a long time getting very good at being heard.
